A conventional astrological reading answers a real and useful question: what does this person's chart say about who they are? Esoteric Astrology holds that this is a true but incomplete question -- because the birth chart, read only exoterically, describes the personality: the vehicle a soul is using for this particular incarnation, not the soul itself.
Incorporating the Soul-level chart changes the question being asked. Instead of 'who is this person,' it asks 'who is the soul attempting to become through this person' -- treating the personality's talents, tensions, and patterns not as the whole story, but as raw material the soul is actively working with.
This isn't presented, within the tradition, as a replacement for the personality-level reading, or as a claim that the personality doesn't matter. The relationship runs the other way: the soul's purpose is understood to only be able to express itself through the personality it has been given, imperfect and specific as it is. A soul-level reading doesn't bypass the personality chart -- it asks what that particular personality, with its particular gifts and frictions, is actually for.

Of every point in a chart, the Rising Sign -- the Ascendant -- carries a particular weight in this tradition's soul-level reading. Where the Sun sign is read as the seat of Personality, the Ascendant is read as the point of Soul Purpose: not who a person habitually presents as, but the quality the soul is intending to develop and express through this specific incarnation. One description of it, drawn directly from esoteric chart analysis, calls it the purpose of the soul ray -- the point where your soul left off last life, and the new qualities it means to develop this time.
